Class activity - Board game creation

Being put into groups of three, we were assigned to create a race-to-the-finish board game in 30 minutes. The premise of the game had to be inspired by a random news story in the newspaper. Our board game, which we called Evacuation!, was based on the recent terror attack in London.

We decided to make Evacuation! a non-linear board game, meaning that there are different paths the players may take depending on an even or odd dice roll. Another unique element we implemented was the role of a bad guy, where one of the players would start a little later in the game and try to catch up to another player to capture him/her.

In our limited time, we used orange construction paper to make the marker lines we drew easier to read, and to show empathises on the feeling of danger in the game. Once completed, another group tried out the game for themselves, and graded us with a 4/5.

Below is a photo of our board game, as well as the premise and rules we wrote up for it:

Evacuation!

Premise:

An attack is unfolding in your city, and the bad guy has set you as your next target! You must make your way to the evacuation centre to stay safe, and be careful of obstacles that will slow you down. Will you have enough luck to survive?

Rules:

  1. At least two players are playing the game.

  2. Each play chooses a token.

  3. Each player must roll the dice once before the game starts, and the highest-scoring player starts first, and turns go clockwise.

  4. All tokens start from Start Point (S).

  5. In each turns, each player must roll the dice. The score is the movement of the player's token.

  6. When a player gets to a Stop sign, the player must stop, no matter what number the player has rolled. The player must obey the description under the Stop sign. And whatvever you roll at the Stop sign, you move forward.

  7. The first to the end wins.

  8. But most importantly, enjoy!
